Book of the Week- Announcement

Well, I just started this blog a couple of weeks ago and it already has 20 reviews on in it. Wow!! Isn't that amazing. I've decided that instead of doing a review about every single book I read, I should do it on my favorite book that week. So, once a week I'll write a review on the best book of the week on each Friday. That'll be much easier than what I have been doing. So enjoy the Book of the Week. :)

Iron Hearted Violet- September 23,2013

The end of their world begins with a story. This one.

In most fairy tales, princesses are beautiful, dragons are terrifying, and stories are harmless. This isn't most fairy tales.

Princess Violet is plain, reckless, and quite possibly too clever for her own good. Particularly when it comes to telling stories. One day she and her best friend, Demetrius, stumble upon a hidden room and find a peculiar book. A forbidden book. It tells a story of an evil being--called the Nybbas--imprisoned in their world. The story cannot be true--not really. But then the whispers start. Violet and Demetrius, along with an ancient, scarred dragon, may hold the key to the Nybbas's triumph...or its demise. It all depends on how they tell the story. After all, stories make their own rules.

Iron Hearted Violet is a story of a princess unlike any other. It is a story of the last dragon in existence, deathly afraid of its own reflection. Above all, it is a story about the power of stories, our belief in them, and how one enchanted tale changed the course of an entire kingdom.

My Opinion:

This story involves as many would say an ugly princess and her best friend, though I would call her beautiful anyway in personality and out. This is an original concept through and through. I have never read a story like this before. At first I was hesitant to read the whole book, because it starts out a little slow. Eventually though the gem inside came out. I liked the characters though besides Cassian, Violet, and Demetrius the rest of them are really just part of the background. You really don't hear or read about an "ugly" princess that much. In a way Kelly Branhill addresses that by making you root for her princess anyway. Sometimes Violet may get on your nerves, but you know the reason why. I suggest you read this book and her other book The Mostly True Story of Jack. You won't be disappointed and at the end of the story , you'll always be wanting more.

From the undisputed master of the medical thriller comes the story of a deadly epidemic spread not merely by microbes but by sinister sabotage—a terrifying cautionary tale for the millennium as the health care giants collide.
After he loses first his Midwestern ophthalmology practice to a for-profit medical giant and then his family to a commuter airline tragedy, Dr. John Stapleton's life is transformed to ashes. Feeling less the golden boy than a jaded cynic, Stapleton retrains in forensic pathology and relocates to find an uneasy niche for himself in a city that suits his changed perspective: the cold, indifferent, concrete maze of New York.
Stapleton thinks he is past pain and past caring, but as a series of virulent and extremely lethal illnesses—capped by a particularly deadly outbreak of a rare strain of influenza—strikes the young, the old, and the innocent, his suspicions are aroused. When the apparent epicenters of these outbreaks are revealed to be hospitals and clinics controlled by the same for-profit giant that cannibalized his old ophthalmology practice, Stapleton fears he has stumbled upon a diabolic conspiracy of catastrophic proportions: Could the for-profit giant be engaged in the systematic elimination of its more costly subscribers?
Getting at the truth leads to Stapleton's unlikely pairing—both professionally and personally—with Terese Hagen, an art director at a hot Madison Avenue advertising firm. Together they discover that the real explanation behind the killer contagions is even more Machiavellian than could be imagined.
Contagion anticipates some of the uncharted consequences of managed health care, in an age when even the wariest consumer may be at risk. It is Robin Cook at his unerring best.

My Opinion:

Have you ever seen the movie Contagion? Well did you know there is a book which is the movie is probably  based on.I like a little syfy scientific scare to read, though watching it on screen is much harder and scarier. This book is really hard to explain without giving out spoilers, but I here I try.

I really liked this book. I never knew the scares of a hospital before reading this book. Learning about different bacterial infections and the simple ways one deliberate mistake in a hospital can be the end of many lives is very interesting. So you must just go out and read it. This is for the mystery loving scientists out there.

P.S. Robin Cook is a great author and if you like this book check out the other books in the series. I suggest reading Vector (that's very good  book also- I read it two years ago, sadly out of order though).

Pirate Emperor- September 21,2013

Pirate Emperor

298 pages
The Wave Walkers

Overview:

In the vast Caribbean Sea, pirates Jolly and Griffin are stranded on a tiny island where a peculiar architect is building an enormous bridge -- but to where? Another world? Before they can find out, the bridge bursts into flames and the kobalins attack. Jolly and Griffin have nowhere to run until the Ghost Trader mysteriously appears and carries them off to the magical coral city of Aelinium. It is from Aelinium that Jolly and Munk are supposed to descend far, far into the deep to keep out the world-devouring Maelstrom.

But Jolly isn't ready for that task. She wants to rescue Captain Bannon, the only father she ever knew, so she steals the ghost ship and sets sail. Griffin follows her, until he is trapped by the man in the whale. Princess Soledad has her own plans -- to kill Pirate Emperor Kendrick. But the truly terrifying cannibal king stands in her way. Is Soledad ready to become the new pirate emperor?

My Opinion:

This book is very interesting. Jolly and Munk's friendship has definitely changed. Jolly has started rethinking about this whole saving the world business, because all she wants to do is be a pirate. If i ever read a book where the main character just went along with saving the world and not thinking about it first, I would think they were crazy. I would be like they have the wrong person the whole time, until the climax of the story where I have a change of heart. Jolly just went through that and I loved her character more for it. Sadly though Munk started getting on my nerves. I'm glad not many of the chapters were narrated by him. All in all, this book was great and in my opinion much better than the first one. I can't wait to read the next book.

Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King- September 19,2013

Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King
William Joyce and Laura Geringer
228 pages
The Guardians

Overview:
Direct from The Guardians of Children website (http://www.theguardiansofchildhoodbooks.com/north.php)

Before St. Nick was St. Nick, he was North—Nicholas St. North, a daredevil swordsman, ruffian, and notorious outlaw. North's prowess with weaponry of all kinds was infamous, and he sought treasure and riches at all costs. Hardly hero material. But heroes are not born—they're tested.

My Opinion:

I first wanted to read this book after learning that Rise of the Guardians     was  based on a series of books. I loved that movie and couldn't wait to see how the books compared. And I was not disappointed. This book was a straight page turner full of action, magic, fantasy, and everything in between. I cheered North and the crew on the whole way throughout the book. This book if you haven't guessed is the background story of Santa Claus. This is a much more interesting story than the traditional legend. Learn about the first Guardian of Children. Read this book and then the others in the Guardians series. I know I will.

P.S. There are 6 books in the series.

P.P.S The book has pictures! :)

After five months of sheer absolute craziness I was going back to being plain old background D.J. In photographs of course I’m always in the background . . .
But it turns out other folks have big plans for D.J. Like her coach. College scouts. All the town hoops fans. A certain Red Bend High School junior who’s keen for romance and karaoke. Not to mention Brian Nelson, who she should not be thinking about! Who she is done with, thank you very much. But who keeps showing up anyway . . .

My Opinion:

A beautiful thing has been achieved on this day. I have finished/completed a full series. This was the last book in the Dairy Queen series. I read all three books and noticed so much throughout the whole series. I learned that everyone is a cow (read book #1-to understand this reference). I learned that the little things you never think about are the hardest. Lastly ,though its not really that important, I learned why the series is Dairy Queen except for the obvious reason of course. This book completed the growth of  D.J. Schwenk and I am glad I was able to share the journey with her. Read these books. My favorite was book 2- Off Season. You won't regret it. Catherine Gilbert Murdock is a great author.

The Flame of Olympus- September 18, 2013

 The Flame of Olympus
Kate O'Hearn
385 pages
Pegasus

Overview
Direct from Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Flame-Olympus-Pegasus-Kate-OHearn/dp/144244410X)

When Pegasus crashes onto a Manhattan roof during a terrible storm, thirteen-year-old Emily’s life changes forever. Suddenly allied with a winged horse she’d always thought was mythical, Emily is thrust into the center of a fierce battle between the Roman gods and a terrifying race of multiarmed stone warriors called the Nirads. Emily must team up with a thief named Paelen, the goddess Diana, and a mortal boy named Joel in order to return Pegasus to Olympus and rescue the gods from a certain death.

Along the way, Emily and her companions will fight monsters, run from a government agency that is prepared to dissect Pegasus, and even fly above the Manhattan skyline—all as part of a quest to save Olympus before the Olympic flame burns out.

My Opinion:

Well here it is; another mythology books. This book is about the Greek gods, but as their Roman counterparts. I liked how this book didn't really focus on the major gods- Athena (Minerva), Zeus(Jupiter), Poseidon (Neptune), etc. Also, this book involved the government. That was a big twist, I've never seen these two mixed together before. I really liked this book. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
